Assistive technology is formally defined and written into the Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
1990
Americans with Disabilities Act: protects individual from employment discrimination if person is able to complete job with reasonable accommodations. Accommodations include assistive technology and technology access.
1992
The Rehabilitation Act is amended. Vocational rehabs are required to focus on employment outcomes and provide AT. Also, students that are not eligible for special education may still be eligible for accomodations under at 504.
1998 Congress amends the Rehabilitation Act to include that all barriers be removed and technology and informative technology be accessible to people with disabiltiies

IDEA changes their definition of Assistive Technology.
1996 Telecommunication Act of 1996
in 1990, IDEA is amended and includes AT under "related services." This gave students a right to AT in their IEP.
1988 Technology Related Assistance Act was passed by congress to increase accessibility and funding for AT
1975 IDEA is created and does not include assistive technology at this point.
