Animal Farm
Acting
How did Musolino form the different characters and animals, and their personalities?
Squealer: drawn in, holding jacket, high-pitched voice; irritating yet charismatic; love/hate; 'fake': he is the medium, the middleman, the profiteer, media man/spin doctor
Napoleon: tall, large arm gestures, often one arm up gesticulating, eyes and chin up and away from subject; when he yelled he would also make screeching pig noises: the leader, the tyrant, the dictator
Boxer: fists for hooves; rounded shoulders and arms hanging forward; chest forward; voice was breathy and exhausted; moved head up and down like a horse: loyal labourer; idealist
Benjamin: loose jaw, jutted forward; furrowed brow; slouch; head shaking and always on the side: older generations, wise, pessimist
-
Sheep: eyes crossed; lips pushed out to make a mouth; slow speaking and movement. Mouthpieces for Napoleon, the common masses, etc
Dogs: spit flying, down on all fours; angular expressions; weight forward on hands; often lit by a footlight: soldiers / enforcement
Human characters: wore a jacket when human; Jones' face not seen, turned away from the audience and walking up the stage. Humans were seen as caricatures. Humans are the previous regime
-
When shifting characters, he would make the change very clear
-
The pigs in general represent the 1% the privileged, the upper class, etc
Old Major: chin shrunk in, speaking gruffly, Winston Churchill; he is the inspiration / the father figure
Actor managed to create animals, but also animals that had personality
When actor goes down on all fours, it demonstrates descent into beasts, rather than animals/characters etc
Staging
-
-
Flour / ash /dust to create explosion but also represent loss, battle, fatigue
Characters used the slope of the stage to demonstrate power; e.g. Old Major and pigs up the top, Boxer moving downstage as he aged; dogs aggressively over the front
LED inserts to represent location e.g. the barn, the farmhouse; bedrooms
Set IS a black mirror, therefore the narrative takes place in the mirror
-
Lighting
-
-
Lighting used to generate excitement due to increasing flashing, pulsing, intensity etc - e.g. during execution scene
-
Started white, became blue, ended up red
-
Gunshot was a single line down the stage with little red dots; lightning flashing; heart beat and connected to music
Minimalist and low-intensity lighting on face and body to show narration, LEDs used to generate most of the lights
Green lighting used occasionally: unsettling, not natural, unwell, sickness. Green was used a lot for humans
-
Sound
Electronic, humming, pulsing, static, white noise
Sound used to demonstrate events that took place e.g. gunshots, mill collapsing, thunderstorm
-
Sound used to create atmosphere and mood, not make it realistic

Community, societal structures, etc

Cast and Crew
Director: Geordie Brookman; Designer: Bianka Kennedy; Lighting: Alexander Ramsay; Sound: Andrew Howard; Cast: Renato Musolino
Directorial Concept
-
Wished to show the audience into the narrative and tell a story, rather than entertaining them
'Black Mirror' - our "soul-sucking" devices suck us in and enable a post-truth society that can lead to the fascism seen in Animal Farm
-
-
Costumes
The jacket shifted to become objects such as dead animals; tied together with lighting effects to make it look like a body - GROTWOSKI OBJECT TRANSFORMATION
Trench coat was long, villainous, suspicious,
-
-
Black and dark clothing made him neutral, allowed a platform for characterisation
