Carpetbaggers
Carpetbaggers were Northerners who moved South in 1865 to take advantage of the economic situation down there. They were known as Carpetbaggers as they used cheap bags made from Carpet fabric. They bought/rented land seen as unprofitable without slaves. Initially they were welcomed thanks to their investments in the region, but were soon resented as many Southerners felt they were being taken advantage of. They also had a huge influence in Politics, with 60 of them elected into Congress as Republicans
