Domains and Kingdoms
Domain Bacteria
-
-
Some bacteria us harmful, such as those who cause strep throat, where as others are helpful by providing vitamins
Domain Archaea
They are prokaryotes, some are hetertrophs and some are autotrophs
Can be found in some of the most extreme environments on Earth, including hot springs, very salty water, swamps, and the intestines of cows
Although bacteria and archaea are similar there important differences are in structure and chemical makeup
Domain Eukarya
Examples: seaweeds, mushrooms, tomatoes and dogs
Organism in this domain are all eukaryotes which means that all the organism in this domain contain cells with a nucleus
Scientist classify organisms in the domain Eukarya into four smaller categories: protists, fungi, plants and animals
Fungi
Most fungi are multi cellular eukaryote. Some examples: mushrooms, molds, mildew
-
-
Protists
This is any eukaryotic organism that cannot be classified as an animal, plant, or fungus. Some are autotrophs, heterotrophs, unicellular or multi-cellular. Known as "odds and ends".
Plants
-
Eg. dandlions, mosses peas, redwood trees
-
Animals
Eg. a dog, humans, fleas, a cat
They are all multi-cellular eukaryotes, heterotrophs. They all have different adaptations that allow them to locate food, capture it, eat it, and digest it
-
3 main domains-- Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. Within domains are kingdoms!
Organism are placed into domains and kingdoms based on their cell type, their ability to make food, and the number of cells in their body
