Effective against gram-positive bacteria (bacteria capable of being stained by Gram’s stain) and a few gram-negative bacteria.

Gram-negative bacteria have a peptidoglycan cell wall sandwiched between a plasma membrane and an outer lipid membrane.
The lipopolysaccharide and protein layer that surrounds the peptidoglygan layer of the cell wall, prevents penicillin from attacking.
