Periodic Table - Trends (Group 7 (Boiling point (Increases down the group)…
Periodic Table - Trends
Group 7
-
Atomis Radius
The atomic size increases down the group because each element has one extra filled main level of electrons compared with the one above it
-
-
-
Group 2
-
Reactivity with water
-
Gets more reactive down the group because the shells shield some of the attraction of the nucleus and so the force between the protons and electrons decrease
-
First ionisation energy
-
The atomic size increases and the electron has gone into a new level and is sheilded by filled inner levels
-
Period 3
-
Atomic radius
Size of atoms decreases
There is no additional shell of electrons so the increased nuclear charge pulls the electrons closer, hence why the radius decreases
First ionisation energy

However, Al and S are odd and are lower. In Al it is because there is a higher energy level than in magnesium ( an S sub level) so is easier to remove with less energy
In Sulphur, there are unpaired electrons in the same sub level that means that less energy is needed on remove one of the paired electrons
