Compliance
Changing behaviour in public
privately disagreeing
e.g. crossing the road at a red man because other people in your group do it
Superficial change
behaviour stops as soon as group pressure stops
Identification
Something in the group we value
Change our behaviour to be a part of it.
Publicly change our behaviour
Sometimes privately agree.
Internalisation
Someone genuinely accepts the group norms.
Private and public change in behaviour
Change in behaviour persists even when group pressure stops
e.g. becoming vegetarian
EXPLANATION
Normative Social Influence
Reacting to norms of a group
To be liked by the group
Gain social approval and avoid rejection.
Emotional process
Happens with strangers
Fear of rejection
Around friends
Want most social approval
Informative Social Influence
Person with the best infromation
To be right
Cognitive process
Happens in ambiguous situations
Not sure the right answer
Crisis situations
Need an answer quick so will go with the majority
Someone seen as smarter

EVALUATION
Research Support (ISI)
Study with students and easy/difficult maths problems
Greater conformity to incorrect answers with difficult questions
Mostly true for students who rated poor maths ability.
People conform in situations where the answer is unclear
Look to others and assume they know better than us.
Individual differences (NSI)
Research shows NSI doesn't affect everyone in same way.
e.g. people less concerned with being liked are less affected by NSI
Vice versa - nafiliators
Desire to be liked underlies conformity for some more than others.
Individual differences in the way people respond.
