Domains and Kingdoms
Domain Eukarya

Scientists classify organisms in the domain of ekarya into four kingdoms: protists, fungi, plants, and animals
Protists
"A protist is any eukaryotic organism that cannot be classified as an animal, plant or fungus"
Members of the protist kingdom differ from each other greatly; some are autotrophs, while some are heterotrophs; some are unicellular, while some are multicellular
Fungi
Organisms in the fungi kingdom are mostly multicellular eukaryotes; they exist, but very few unicellular eukaryotes
ALL fungi are heterorophs; most live on land, some live in water

Plants

Plants are autotrophs, and make their own food through photosynthesis; they then provide food for heterotrophs

Animals

Each animal has a different adaption to the world that helps them thrive; whether this is through eating habits or diverse habitats
Domain Bacteria

Organisms that are classified into domain bacteria are called PROKARYOTES; which are organisms that that do not have a nucleus

Organisms that can make their own food are AUTOTROPHS; organisms that can not make their own food are called HETEROTROPHS; bacteria can be either
Some bacteria can be harmful, but most are helpful; they can produce vitamins and recycle chemicals
Domain Archaea

Archaea are organisms that can be found in the harshest of conditions; these include hot springs, very salty water, swamps, and even intestines or animals; scientists believe that the conditions they live in now are like the ones on ancient Earth
Like bacteria, arcaea are prokaryotes, only UNICELLULAR, meaning they are made of only one cell
While arcaea and bacteria are similar, they are classified in different domains, and the structure and chemical makeup of each, differs
Today we use a three-domain system to classify organisms; "organisms are placed into domains and kingdoms based on their cell type, their ability to make food, and the number of cells in their bodies
