An Inspector Calls Context
Britain 1912
British society was firmly divided by class so those with the most money had the most power. In 1945 the divide was less visible as there were wars and voting changes that broke down class divisions
The labour party was founded in 1909 and looks more at the interests in working class citizens
Only MEN who owned property could vote and women were not allowed to vote at all
Women's lives were controlled by their family and her husband
From 1928 all men and women at whichever class they were could vote, this meant that power was more even
There was a general strike in in 1926 where many important industries stopped functioning
Gender Roles
From 1928, woman were able to vote as well as working class men, this was a result to the suffragette movement where brave women stood up for what they believed in
Women were stereotypically meant to be obsessed with their image and with clothes but over time, through the suffragette movement, women were viewed to be stronger and have a more important role in society.
In WW2, women helped make bombs and work in the fields to get food while the men were off fighting at war
Social Class
There were three layers in the class and these were Working class, Middle class and Upper class and the characters in An Inspector Calls portray these layers
He though class shouldn't matter but he used the play to show the unfairness of the class system
He used the Birling to show the bad qualities the ruling class had
The older generation represent the ruling class within society
Children should be seen and not heard and people didn't like it when they were challenged by their kids, so kids have a much different amount of power than they they did back then to-today
Politics
In 1909, the labour party was formed and it looked towards the interests of the working class. Labour wasn't popular.
Priestley though that the only way to stop war was to gain mutual respect between countries
Priestley became concerned with social inequality
