On a taxonomic key, two statements are contrasting
"Choose the one statement that applies to the organism. Follow the direction at the end of that statement. For example, if an organism has eight legs, follow the direction at the end of the statement 1a, which says "Go to Step 2." Continue this process until the key leads you to the organism's identity."
