Dialogue
Use of localized dialogue (accent, contractions, etc.) can be a character trait in and of itself
Reflects education, childhood, nationality... the list goes on
Don't be cliche, however. Avoid stereotypes, avoid saying the same thing over and over again
Exclamations
Man, I really wish I could swear.
Frequent exclamations often lend a sense of impoliteness, brashness, or heightened emotions to dialogue
Formatting emotion
If two characters are fighting, or expressing other strong emotions, it's often best to go easy on the dialogue tags. A rapid-fire conversation should get as much talking out as fast as possible
If a conversation is slower and more thoughtful, use more internal monologue
