Relationship Abuse in Teens
What age of teens?
It starts younger than you think. Some women experience relationship abuse as young as 11! Most of the abuse occurs between the ages of 16-24 because they do not know the signs of abuse at a young age so they can't prevent it in the future.
Teenage girls experience abuse 3x as much as adult women.
1 in 6 teenage boys will experience relationship abuse by the time they graduate high school, while 1 in 4 teenage girls will.
Why Teens?
Many teens don't know the signs of abuse even though as many as 75% of parents report having a conversation about the signs.
When the parents were asked what the signs were only 58% knew them.
Why does it Matter
It matters because the younger we teach children what abuse is, how to recognize it, and how to get help, the safer they will be and the more likely it will be that they will get help.
Solution
Go to a trusted adult.
Have more programs and get more awareness.
Deliver the a message to the ones that are abused, that it isn't ok to go through what they go through.
Present ones that are abused with a safe option.
Where does the abuse happen?
It can take place anywhere.
43% of teens say that some of the abuse took place on school grounds.
It takes place mostly while the couple is alone.
What are the signs of abuse?
Frequent harsh words, hitting, punching, kicking, shoving, mean comments, harassment, extreme jealousy.
