[Conscience]
Freud (atheist)
-
rejects the notion that the conscience was rational - for him it's an influence on human behaviour that could be healthy or unhealthy
-
unconscious mind: repressed thoughts and feelings including primitive desires, wish fulfillment, pleasure and gratification
preconscious mind: memories that are not readily available but accessible, perhaps through therapy
-
the human psyche
-
chariot analogy - the id is the 'horse' the unevolved instinctive part of the brain responsible for urges and desires we repress. ego is the driver, the rational part of our brain which can guide the id but never has full control. superegos chariot drivers father sitting behind him, pointing out his mistakes, responsible for criticism and moralising
es, ich, uber ich (id, ego, over-ego)
-
ego - what restrains the id. identifies when pleasures can be delayed or when it's socially inappropriate to give in to desire (as ultimately this leads to less pleasure - i.e. you're shunned from society) or when desires cannot be fulfilled for whatever reason
super-ego - internalisation of outer authorities. always striving for perfection (balance between id and ego) so guilt is a process by which this is achieved. can rule the ego - unhealthily
guilt experience as a result of the superego might not actually be right or proper so the conscience might not be reliable. might be dangerous to listen to it too much and link to neurosis/repression(voluntarily)/suppression(involutary)

OVERALL
-
-
knowledge can be incomplete or wrong but we have some control over this - primary precepts = education of the young
-
Aquinas - "conscience is called the law of our understanding because it is a judgement of reason derived from the natural law"
-
synderesis vs sensuality
-
-
Aquinas has a positive view on humans and trusts they would largely do good and can often make good judgments as a result
conscientia
-
-
conscience is therefore movement from the understanding of natural moral principles into the intellectual judgments
-
-
ignorance
vincible ignorance
-
-
action is not justified by their clear conscience, ignorance is bliss doesn't work !
-
aquinas' example
-
a man sleeps with anothers wife because he believes that this woman is his own wife. this is not his fault - invincible
Fletcher
conscience is a verb, not a noun
conscience in the traditional sense doesn't exist, it isn't reflective tool
conscience is the process by which we make and act upon an ethical decision. it's something we do, rather than have
