Development Gap
The development gap is the difference in levels of development between the richest and poorest countries
Qatar- HIC- GNI per capita: $128,060
Afghanistan- LIC- 585.85 USD
The gap is generally caused by rich countries being able to exploit the poorer countries as they have the dominant political power to be able to do so. As a result, the poorer countries suffer from lack of resources and spiral into poverty cycles which widen the development gap
Countries can decrease the development gap when they have products and materials to trade, for example Qatar discovered a field of oil called "The Dukhan Field" a huge oil field bringing them tons of income.
In 1951, Qatar produced 46,500 barrels of oil per day, amounting to $4.2 million in revenue. The discovery of off-shore oil fields and their development by Shell led to an increase in Qatar's production to 233,000 barrels per day.
There can be multiple reasons for a lack of development, like natural hazards, terrorism, low employment rates and corrupt governments.
for example afghanistan is one of the worlds least developed countries because of the terrorist group "The Taliban". However, it has been estimated that poverty in Afghanistan is mainly concentrated in rural areas. It has been estimated that four out of five poor people live in rural areas.
