Gender and education.
In School Factors
Teacher Labelling – typical boys = disruptive, low expectation, typical girls = studious, high expectations

Traditional masculine identities – boys just don’t see school as a ‘boy thing’ – Working class boys had a more ‘laddish’ approach to school rather than working hard, middle class boys work hard but hide the fact they are.
-
Verbal Abuse – boys who study hard get called names such as ‘gay’ as a term of abuse which puts them off continuing to work hard.
Achievement
-
Today, girls do better than boys by about 8% points at GCSE.
-
Subject Choice
