FACTORS AFFECTING REACTION RATE
CONCENTRATION
The more concentrated the solution, the faster the reaction rate.
Because it increases the amount of collisions.
NATURE OF THE REACTANTS
1- Phase: Reactions with solids are slower.
2- Reactions involving ionic compounds are faster than covalent compounds.
CATALYSTS
A catalyst is a substance that can be added to a reaction to increase the reaction rate without getting consumed in the process. Catalysts typically speed up a reaction by reducing the activation energy or changing the reaction mechanism.
Enzymes: are protein molecules in cells which work as catalysts.
PRESSURE
High pressure increase reaction rate
TEMPERATURE
increasing temperature --> increase rate of reaction
example: reaction that cause foods to spoil occur faster at room temperature than in refrigerator
high kinetic energy
more collisions
higher % of particles have minimum energy
SURFACE AREA
Increasing the surface area of a reactant speeds up the rate of reaction by increasing the collision rate between reacting particles
