Complement Factors
Characteristics
-
Three types: classical, alternative, lectin
-
-
-
Complement lyses microbes, increases chemotaxis, enhances inflammation and induces oponisation
Activation
-
-
-
Two phases: 1. Activation of C3 component
- Activation of attack pathway
Cleavage of C3 is achieved via classical, alternative and lectin pathways
Classical Pathway
-
Conformational change allows C1 to bind to antibody, generates C3 convertase
-
-
Alternative Pathway
-
Is responsible for innate defence against microbes as it functions in the absence of specific antibodies
-
Lectin Pathway
Initiated when mannose-binding lectin binds to mannose on bacterial cell walls, yeast walls or viruses
-
DEFINITION: A group of 20 serum proteins that need to be activated to be functional. They form a major effector system for antibody-mediated immune reactions
