Situation Ethics (6 propositions (love is the norm (overarching rule)…
Situation Ethics
-
the 4 working principles
pragmatism
practicality of ethics. ought implies can. need to physically be able to do it- common sense approach the most practical thing is the most loving
relativism
means absolute rules don't always apply, they depend on the situation. if love demands you're hungry, then steal. however doesn't allow for everything.
eg. 'to prevent peter smedley dying a slow and painful death, i can euthanise him now' does not become 'euthanasia is always acceptable'

A02 - relative ethics are open to abuse, people could lie about what the 'most loving' thing is
-
just because something is good for one country (Nazi germany) doesn't mean it's good for another (england)
A02 - having one absolute is too simplistic, is it really possible to use this principle to make an ethical decision
-
There is only one ultimate and invariable duty, and its formula is "thou shalt love your neighbour as thyself". How to do this is another question, but this is the whole of moral duty- William Temple
-
Legalism = letter of the law reigns, not the spirit of the law. - fletcher disagrees with this

A02 - kant says no one should be used as a means to an end so the ends don't justify the means like fletcher argues
A02 - rejected by most christians who don't see jesus as 'situationist', jesus clearly had moral principles as he was seen as obedient
