Direct and Representative Democracy
Democracy
As and Ds in general
Disadvantages
an
unskilled voting majority
could lead to
Demagoguery
- a leader in a Democracy who gains popularity by
exploiting prejudice, fear and ignorance
- Trump 2016 for example (
Plato, The Republic, book 6
)
we elect
people who tell us what we want to here (
idealists
)
rather than
the people who are honest through criticism and accurate on their views on society (
realists
) (
Socrates, sweet shop owner and a doctor, the sweet shop owner will win even though its worse for you
)
Advantages
People are given a voice to
exercise their right as a human being to freedom of speech
and other freedoms - everyone's voices is heard
gives
power to the people
, the voters are playing god, who goes and stays
Direct Democracy
: key features; As and Qs
Citizens make the decisions
themselves instead of delegates/MPs
the people are the gov. their is
no middle man/ruling- class/elite
between the gov. and its people
citizens are engaged in politics
as all decisions made are made by the people
Disadvantages
Unworkable in modern society as a
big majority will always be against the decisions
that are made, sparking controversy -
Brexit
direct democracy would be
the only ob for citizens
as theirs that much legislation and other democratic things to vote on that it
will not allow
other things such as
careers or personal life
-
time consuming and sheer volume of voting
Advantages
only
pure
form of
democracy
direct democracy leads to an
educated society
direct democracy
doesn't allow the public's faith in elected politicians
who constantly
spin doctor
the truth in order to distort public opinion
citizens are responsible for gov.'s decision
making the gov. stable and 100% legit
Example referendum -
Brexit
Representative Democracy
: key features; As and Qs
citizens choose
who makes the decisions on the constituencies behalf -
MPs/delegates
its
limited
as the act of
voting
is only
done every couple of years
-
general elections
people are linked to various institutions -
trade unions
Advantages
people
still have the
power
we
elect
people to
represent
us
and our views at PM questions ect. and
other
formal/national/international
meetings
the delegated MP will
vote on their constituencies interests
examples
general elections
disadvantages
time consuming
delegates may disagree
with their constituencies' views on certain things
