Crude Oils and Fuels

Cracking

-
-
-
Long chains are thick liquids or solids with high boiling points, are difficult to vaporize and do not burn easily, so can't be used as fuels
Hydrocarbons are cracked because the heavier fractions from fractional distillation of crude oil are not in high demand
You do this by putting orange bromine water on the hydrocarbon, and if it turns colorless it's an alkene, if it doesen't its an alkane
-
Alkanes
-
All the carbon-carbon bonds are single covalent bonds, meaning they can contain as many hydrogen atoms as possible in each molecule
-
Combustion
-
Incomplete
Instead of all the carbon in the fuel turning into carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide gas is also formed (CO)
Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas, it is colorless and odorless
