    - - A government run by a Shogun. In Japan, the government was run by military generals while the Emperor had no real power.
    - - When a country separates itself from all social, political and economic ties to other countries.
    - - Idealistic Japanese warriors who rejected western influence in Japan.
      - Believed that Japan was sacred and that the Emperor, a figurehead, was God.
      - Angry that the shogun signed a treaty without the Emperor’s consent.
  - - - Japan feared the effect that Europeans were having on other Asian nations so they stopped all trade, closed all foreign embassies, killed any foreign sailors, and sank any ships that came back. For 200 years.
      - Japan stopped all trade with foreign countries, closed foreign embassies, killed sailors that washed onto Japan territory, and sunk foreign ships.
    - - Because of unification and a lack of foreign enemies, people had peace and time to develop art and perfected old traditions. Poetry, drama, textiles, pottery. This heavily influenced western art too when the borders were opened.
    - - Because of isolation, Japan was not influenced by outside countries. However this meant that Japan did not make progress with industry or technology, like other industrialized countries had.

      - America bribes them with US weapons and technology the Japan doesn't have.
      - Japan is unsure about the offer. The US leaves temporarily to give the Japanese time to come up with an answer.

        The Japanese government did not have very much money. What little they have was given as bribes to lords.

        Rigid social structure allowed for very little mobility between classes. Little motivation.
        
        Japan did not have an industrial revolution yet. The US had weapons and technology that the Japanese did not have, for example steam power, rifles, cannons, or industrial factories. They even had steel, industrialized, weaponized, steam powered war ships with them. The Japanese had wooden/leather armor, swords, bows and arrows, and small, canoe, like ships made of wood.
        
        The US is more powerful than Japan. Japan couldn't say no.

        A treaty between Japan and the US to open trade between the two countries. 1854
    - - The Samurai are angry at the treaty and thee Westerner's. They felt that the US was an attack on Japanese cultures and traditions. They believed that Japan is sacred, and that the Emperor is God. However, the treaty was signed without the consent of the Emperor so the Samurai are angry. The shogun is overthrown by a group of Samurai and they appoint Meiji as emperor.
      - The Emperor modernized and industrialized Japan. The more European you were, the more modernized you were. Because Japan was so isolated, and because the world around them had developed so much, when they opened up, they took the best aspects of developed countries and incorporated it into Japanese society. (ie. Free Education, Armies, Government, Social Structure, Navy, Land Redistribution, Opened up to human rights and religious freedoms, Written Constitution, Money and Banking system). He plans to fight fire with fire
      - Industrialization in Japan happened over 50 years. Many people died.
      - Thanks to their technology and new industry, Japan beat a powerhouse European country. Russia! Which scared Europe.

        European and American ideas became popular to Japan
        
        Japan started using American technology and firearms
        
        Western clothing and fashion
- - - - With this new technology, white, industrialized countries could overpower other territories and conquer new lands for their own benefit
      - This led to economic, military, and ideological motives for Imperialism
      - The Industrial Revolution in America and Europe led to the mass manufacturing, development, and innovation of advance weapons and technology other countries did not have

        Back then, there weren't laws protecting soldiers from going against their commander's orders if it was illegal. Many US soldiers didn't want to murder people like they did but they had to follow orders, otherwise they were breaking the law.

      - In order to wage a genocide against a group of people, you need to dehumanize them. The ideology at the time was that all humans deserve equal rights. That they are equal. By dehumanizing them, you deprive them of these rights. This is how people justified their actions. If they weren't human, they don't deserve human rights so we can "kill them/torture them".

      - The retaltion against Filipino people was unfair. The US reciprocated Filipino actions much more extremely and brutally .
- - - - African delegates are missing. This is important because it’s their continent. They should have a say in it because it’s they’re livelihood that will be impacted the most.
      - African tribes are not depicted on the map. This is important because the countries are splitting the land without regard for African tribes already occupying the territory. Also, joining neighboring tribes together in a single nation is not the best idea because they had sold each other as slaves to Europe and America.
