Research Methods Psychology - correlational studies, dispersion, measures of central tendency and distrubutions
-
MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY= are used to summarise large amounts of data into averages (mid point scores)
-
THE MEAN - THE AVERAGE SCORE - calculated by adding all the scores up and dividing by the total number of scores
ADVANTAGES
MOST ACCURATE MEASURE OF CENTRAL TENDENCY- as it uses the INTERVAL LEVEL OF MEASUREMENT - where units of measure of equal size like seconds in time
-
-
-
DISPERSION
-
-
STANDARD DEVIATION= the measure of the variability/ spread of a set of scores from the mean. the larger the standard deviation, the larger the spread of scores will be.
-
-
DISTRIBUTIONS
NORMAL DISTRUBUTION = data with an even distribution of scores either side of the mean. So e.g most scores will be on or around the mean, with decreasing amounts away from the mean.
