Empire/Imperialism
Imperial Germany always strived to become a world power and own a world-wide empire, though she didn't have much territory to invade/imperialize.
In the 18th Century, many big European countries, such as Britain, France, and Spain, imperialized many territories and colonized foreign countries, usually overseas somewhere like in Asia and Africa.
Many European Countries do this, as what they imperialize not only provided land but to obtain rare resources for one's country and for it to trade with each other.
This was not the case for Britain, as she has already owned a huge empire, has industrialized and become very rich. She also made Germany jealous in colonizing parts of Africa and taking most overseas territory.
This ambition made big powerful nations like France and Britain herself alarmed by her. Germany had already shown her hunger for land from his victory in the Franco-Prussian War in the early 1870s.
Strived victoriously, Germany took a rich chunk of land from France called Alsace - Lorraine, which played a role in being a buffer zone, piecing together a rich, small part of the land in building its small empire.
Arms Race/Militerism
Germany's past victory of the Franco-Prussian proved how strong his army was and it created tension with Britain.

In this case, it was mostly a naval race between Britain and Germany to create the most Dreadnought Battleships and their army too.
