Tobique First Nations Climate Change Action Strategic Plan
Strategy 1:Tobique is a leader in the transition to low carbon, sustainable energy use. It is known as the “Cleanest Greenest First Nation in Eastern Canada”
Specific department that works on energy and climate related issues in our territory
Academic partnerships to drive forwards renewable energy research and outcomes
Created investments and partnerships in wind and solar
Rooftop solar across the reserve
Community members are engaged in energy conservation practices
There is less to zero reliance on hydroelectricity
Community members are trained to work in renewable energy installation and maintenance and/or residential energy retrofit installers
Strategy 2: Safe, healthy, energy efficient homes for all of the community
Has a housing strategy
Past decisions that have resulted in infrastructure problems and engineering issues have been corrected
Housing is designed with system thinking and cognisant of the needs of a changing climate such as passive solar, flooding protection, future rain events and energy efficiency
There is enough housing for all community members to live comfortably
The threat of radon has been quantified and mitigated
Houses are resilient to future changing weather and have been built at a higher elevation so that flood related threats are reduced
Housing has been built without unduly disturbing the natural systems – trees have been retained and sites of importance to medicinal plant maintenance and recovery have been maintained.
Strategy 3 The community is experiencing food security in the face of a changing climate
Tobique residents live close to the land and a substantial part of their diet comes from traditional practices
There is an onsite farm that is producing local sustainable foods
Locally produced traditional foods are collected and farmed: pickled fiddle heads
Our waterways are free from contaminants
Residents are supported in creating social enterprise options that would support this vision: U pick fiddleheads.
The species that we hunt are abundant on the land and in the waterways (salmon has returned)
Strategy 4: Land is Protected for Future Generations
Traditional medicines are abundant, flourishing, understood and used by the community
The location of important medicinal plants are known and protected during planning of new developments and renewable projects.
Culturally important plant species (eg sweetgrass) have been successfully reintroduced and protected from future development
Key areas have been protected as Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas or Tribal Parks
Strategy 5: Community is the Eyes and Ears of the Land
Intergenerational sharing of training and knowledge occurs and we have youth who are leaders in climate change intervention
Tobique First Nation has a fully funded Indigenous Guardians Program, linked to the national Indigenous Leadership Initiative, which meets all of our ecological and environmental monitoring, land management and jurisdictional requirements
Aboriginal Fisheries Strategies (AFS) are supported in their current initiatives and expanded to receive updated training and the jurisdiction to patrol our waterways
Strategy 6: Youth are engaged with land protection and have the necessary skills and capacity to play a central and key role
Youth have awareness of how to protect the land and its medicines
We have self-sustaining programs that connect youth to the land
We have programs that connect youth and elders to each other: knowledge transfer
Youth are educated on energy efficiency technology and are actively engaged in employment opportunities that bring energy efficiency and renewable energy to our communities
There are viable economic options for youth in fields that allow them to be the protectors and stewards of our land
Strategy 7: Administrative support for people in key roles
There is central administrative support
There is a mechanism to track and apply for funding opportunities that are aligned with our vision
