RUSHAN: Relate back with local news!
I've given public talks about sea turtles, and a lot of people in Singapore kinda see it as something that's so unrelatable to them, but with sea turtles making headlines in Singapore, people flock for these talks. It then becomes pretty simple to relate it back to the people with local news.
I like flashing up newspaper clippings of sea turtles in local news, especially recent ones, and relate it back to the talk with something like "So these hatchlings are the result of a legacy that has persisted in Singapore since before Sir Stramford Raffles showed up and even before we were established as Temasek."
By mentioning Stamford Raffles and Temasek, a sense of identity is created, and the connection is made between the people and that sense of place, and they get amazed that sea turtles have been around for so long. Make them really think, which I think was pretty good!
