Accountability and Responsibility
Defintion
The relationship between a practitioner and the organisation in question. Failure to exercise responsibility may produce sanctions such as warnings.

To be accountable nurses must:
Have the ability to perform a task
Accept responsibility for doing the task
Have the authority and knowledge to perform the task
Follow the instructions being delegated, the policies and protocols of the organisation.
Purpose of accountability
To show nurses what they are responsible for what they do but also for what they fail to do.
Similiarly students are accountable to the nursing profession and the law
It is used to make sure nurses meet legal requirements. Reg. nurses are accountable to regulatory bodies in terms of standards of practice and patient safety.
It makes sure that the same duty of care is provided for the simple tasks like bathing a patient aswell as the complex more serious tasks like surgery.
With this law in place, it ensures practitioners perform within their scope of practice and they won't work beyond their level of competency

Nurses and midwives are expected to show high standards of professional behaviour.
Nurses and midwives are professionally responsible and accountable for their practice, attitudes and actions; including inactions and omissions.
Nurses and midwives recognise the relationship between professional responsibility and accountability, and their professional integrity.
Nurses and midwives advocate for patients' rights.
Nurses and midwives recognise their role in the appropriate management of health care resources.
Definition
A set of tasks or functions that an employer, professional body, court of law or other recognised body can demand The obligations to perform tasks based on sound professional judgement by a leader. Reg. Nurses are lawfully and professionally answerable for their behaviours regardless if they are following directions from higher powers or working off their own integrity.
