The rise of the charity shop
drawbacks
they take the place of other shops
there are too many of them ('an awful lot')
but...they're not ordinary shops (profit not the goal) + the economic crisis makes them needed for charities to get funding
Do they support the local economy enough?
they sell second-hand products and thus
do not foster growth
NO: they sell products to those who can't afford traditional retailers' products (nuance: not always) + the competition comes from multinationals, not charity shops
example of fast fashion
Are they a source of unfair competition for the other high street shops?
advantages
they are at the heart of a whole network of solidarity (donations, volunteers)
they sell donated items
bargains
a good deed, so a win-win deal
but... local traditional shops have a hard time surviving
they are growing more competitive and sell online
charity shops fill empty spaces between other shops downtown , making the high street more dynamic
they set an example of a sustainable economic model
by preventing waste + for the consumer : taking off the stigma attached to buying second
-hand
the real problem
: charity shops try and compensate for the State's failure
conclusion: charity shops are useful, big retailers should be the target of criticism
