Jesus' flight into Egypt - Talky bit #2
Parallel with our experience?
Come down from heaven (Christmas)
Experience suffering, oppression (ordinariness)
We all suffer
Like the parents of the slaughtered children?
We have all suffered a bit like that
Lost children, loved ones, friends, illness, famine, passed over for promotion: all suffering.
What kind of suffering counts?
Isn't suffering something we do our best to avoid?
Or like Jesus?
Yes, he suffered
from
, a lot.
Threat of death when he was born. Rage of bigots, cruelty of Rome, fade out of friends, nails in his skin.
X quantity of suffering - quality. Suffered with/for others
Rom 8:17
OK - so we have to suffer
No heaven for us, if we don't suffer on earth?
Covenant Service next week
Perhaps I haven't suffered enough?
X suffer
from
- suffer
with
Suffering with is a choice
Suffering
from
is just something that happens. The cancer diagnosis, the unexpected loss
to share someone else's pain
But we have to suffer. To feel pain we don't want to feel, carry burdens , put up with misery, cry tears
Jesus points to suffering people and says 'there I am'. Whenever one of his creation hurts, Jesus hurts.
Whenever we suffer with others, we are suffering with Jesus
Let's not confuse this with some kind of holy masochism. Suffering is suffering, whether
from
or
with
. We must want it to go away to count.
But you choose to feel it as long as the other person feels it. This is Christian love
This is the love that God showed when he sent Jesus. Who loved the world so much that he suffered for all of us.
And now he calls us to follow him, to continue the work that he started, to share in his sufferings and so to share in his glory.
