ROSSETI- From The Antique
The title could suggest that the rules of society have a hold on her as antiques are often possessed by someone.
'It's a weary life, it is, she said'
She is disguising herself and perhaps talking on the behalf of all the other women.
'Doubly blank in a woman's lot'
The adverb 'doubly' emphasises her struggles.
'I wish and I wish I were a man'
A man's life has more purpose, she wants to hide her fragility, this links to the title.
'Were nothing at all in the world'
Not worth anything in society
Not so much as a grain of dust or a drop of water from pole to pole.
worthless and un-appreciated, gives a negative view on women
'Still the world would wag on the same'
3 monosyllabic words to show repetition, the world will not stop for anyone.
'Still the seasons go and come'
Could represent how she feels, men are moving on and being appreciated whereas women are still trying to be noticed.
'Would wake and weary and fall asleep'
Repetition on the first and last line. The poem hasn't changed anything, or changed how she feels.
There is a regular rhyme scheme, this could be due to the regularity of the life she was living at that time. Everything was set in place and everyone knew where they stood.
