Integrated Coastal Zone Management is a process which requires the adoption of a joined-up and participative approach towards the planning and management of the many different elements in coastal areas (land and marine). The recognised key principles which should guide all partners in implementing an integrated approach to the management of coastal areas are:
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Maintain, restore, improve quality of coastal ecosystems and societies they support
Change in policy

Some local authorities= concerned that reduced funding is reducing ability to compensate for loss of property and infrastructure to flooding or erosion
-
SMP
Manage flood and erosion risk for particular stretch of coastline, sustainable management approach, short term= 0-20 years, medium term = 20-50 years, long term = 50-100 years
Advance the Line
extend the coastline seaward, further from the existing shore with new defences
Retreat the line
(Managed Re-alignment or Managed Retreat): sacrifice land to the sea by moving the coastline back, constructing defences further inland
-
-
Impacts
Knock on effects further down coastline, where either no or little protection is in place. groynes stop movement of longshore drift for example so stop movement of sediment further down the coastline. decisions need to be made about where and where not to put defences or move the line.
Managed retreat
Sacrifice land to sea, existing defences abandoned, new habitats established, sea defences used, intertidal zone made.
