Checks and Balances
Checks and balances are a system that allow braches to have power over what other branches can and cannot do.

The legislative branch checks the judicial branch by being able to confirm or refuse to confirm new federal judges/justices.

Federalism
Federalism is the idea that when the federal government and the state government, or the state government and the local government have concurrent powers, the larger goverment will always have their laws followed.
Examples
If a federal law that exists already, and a state government passes a law on the same issue that contradicts the federal law. The people in the state still have to follow the federal law because of federalism.
If there was a court case it in a state court. If the plaintiff was unhappy with the ruling, the case could go to the Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court ruling would be final.
A local government makes a decision regarding marriage laws that contradicts both federal and state regulations. The local government is not allowed to enforce the decision because of federalism.
