3.4.1 + 3.4.2 Different storage methods +the appropriateness of the use of these in context
The cloud:
A software, services and storage areas that run on internet rather than being stored + accessed on a physical device.
Cloud:
Large storage capacity
made up of a lot of servers that store + locate date and information
Has to be accessed through a web browser: Mozilla firefox/Google Chrome/through an app.
How the Cloud stores files:
cloud services are dropbox/microsoft one drive/Amazon Drive files that can be accessed through a internet connection/technology.
Means less physical storage needed.
problems using Cloud:
An internet connection is required to access + work on files.
without this files, software and apps stored on the Cloud can be inaccessible.
If Cloud servers stop working, files, softwares + apps are inaccessible.
cloud stotage area can be hacked.
Physical Devices
Features
of Hard disk drive using magnetic disks
The disks are circular and spin at high speeds while drive heads read and write the data.
Which makes the disks susceptible to dirt and damage if moved suddenly.
Hard disks store huge amount of data.
Uses magnetic disks for storing software + data in files.
T
ypical uses of Hard disk drive using magnetic disks
Storage files and data not currently use
Storage of data, files and software when the software is turned off.
Storage of operating system
Storage of a database of the details of members
Solid state drive
Features
uses flash memory to store software + data in files.
No moving parts, so makes them faster + more reliable than magnetic hard disk drives.
Found in portable computers: netbooks/tablet computers.
faster than hard disk drives.
Store a lot of data as a hard drive
expensive to buy.
Typical use:
Storage of the operating system
Storage of files and data not currently in use
Storage of data, files and software when the computer is turned off.
Optical Device
Features:
Optical drive uses optical media: CDs/ DVDs to store software + data in files.
-If CD-R/RWs or DVD-R/RWs are used files can be read/edited/re-written or deleted.
-Data can be read but not altered if data is stored on CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs.
Blue Ray disks are optical disks that store very large amount of data.
Typical Use:
Storage of files + data have to be moved to another computer.
Storage software for installation on a computer
Storage of data, files and software in backups or archives
Flash memory devices
Features
Small memory sticks contain flash memory + used in USB ports.
Used to store data + files that has been transferred to other computers from cameras/ for taking to phones as the memory card + the office.
Typical uses
To save files on to a flash memory device.
To save images in a camera.
To save contact details in a phone.
