Gold was worth a lot in trading while they were in power, and gold is worth a lot in the modern world as well.
They valued salt a lot because they could preserve their meats, and we use salt today to make our food taste better.
There was at least one university in Africa at the time of their power, and there are a lot of universities in the modern world. The university that was most known was in Timbuktu.
The people of the empires in Africa traded a lot, and we do too.

The trading happened between food, gold, salt, and many other various items that the Africans had access to at the time. They were experts at trade and navigation of the Sahara Desert, and various trade routes. In conclusion, trade as if your life depends on it.
