Organic matter
Mushroom Compost - material in which mushrooms are grown, mostly peat, composted straw and nitrogenous fertiliser.
soil conditioner. steam sterilised - free from P & D, Increases supply of OM and water.
Can increase soil pH because having chalk added to their growing media and can cause nutrients to become unavailable. virtually no nutrients.
Garden compost- 25-50% green, remainder brown
Brown - dry stems, cardboard, paper, straw
-
Fym-
Pros - Good soil conditioner, encourages earthworms. Little enviroment impact. High in nutrients
Cons - Risk of P & D. messy and smelly, shouldn't be used fresh as can cause scorching and leaching of nutrients
Composted green waste
high heat - kills P & D, may contain contaminents eg herbicides, pesticides, glass, plastic. pH varies according to time of year. Low in nutrients
leaf mould
good soil conditioner, little nutrients. Takes 1-2 years to compost
chipped bark
Conditions soil. good as mulch, no nutrients, susceptible to slugs., good around fruit bushes
-
Crop debris
Efficient and sustainable; course, may take time to break down; not to be used if crop diseased;do not incorporate perennial weeds or flowering/seeding weeds
