Halima.Abdi-Urinary system
Functions
Regulations of ions, PH levels & volume in blood
Excretion of wastes, mainly nitrogen and foreign substances, environmental toxins
Define the terms
Resorption-take back most of nutrients, water & ions from tubule into blood capillaries
Secretion-move substances from blood capillaries to kidney tubules
Filtration- blood pushed through glomerbulus-collectin of capillaries-into capsule space(filtrate is pushed out)
Kidney
A typical nephron
Renal tubule
Nephron loop-consists of defending and an ascending limb
Distal convoluted tubules-less active in resorption and secretion, along with collecting ducts-water can still be absorbed under influence of antidiuretic hormone
Proximal convoluted tubules-active in resorption and secretion
Cortical nephron-85% of nephrons, shorter nephron loop
Renal corpuscles
Glomerulus-highly porous capillaries
Juxtamedullary nephron-makes it possible to concentrate on urine
Nephron-renal corpuscles & kidney tubules. Structural & function unit of kidney
Collecting ducts-receives urine from several nephrons and into deep medulla
Internal divisions of renal tissue
Medulla-pyramids-collection of tubules
Minor/major calices-collect urine from tubules and into the renal pelvis
Cortical-renal corpuscles
Renal pelvis-extended superior part of ureter
Urinary tract
Urinary bladder-detrusor muscle -thrust down, pushes urine out
Urethra-passageway-carries urine from bladder to outside of body, also carries sperm in males
Ureters-connect kidneys to bladder
