The Nervous Syste Kennedy Abraham Period:5
Major part of the brain
Cerebrum-Supieor part of the brain and is divided into 2 regions: Sulcus and fissures
Diencephalon- Has both Thalamus(relays sensory info) and hypothalamus(control body temp, water balance, metabolism, and endocrine function)
Brain stem- Has the midbrain, pons, and medulla
Cerebellum- Controls equilibrium and balance
Major functions of the Nervous System
Brain, Spinal cord, Nerves, ears, ears, and skin
Major division of the Nervous System
Central nervous system- Brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system- All nerves that extend from the brain and spinal cord
Lobes and the Functions
Temporal lobe- Hearing, speech, memory, sequencing and organization
Occipital lobe- Vision
Frontal lobe- Personality, emotions, intelligence, attention, concentration, and logic
Parietal lobe- size, shape, color, pain, texture and speech
Layer of Meninges
Pia mater- Inner most membrane surrounding the spinal cord
Arachnoid mater- membrane in between the dura mater and the pia mater
Dura mater- Tough , outer layer lining the vertebral canal
ventricles
Third ventricle
lateral ventricle
Fourth ventricle
Major functions in the spinal cord
Interneurons-Allows reflex to happen
Spinal cord reflexes- 1. withdrawal reflexes 2. Jerk reflexes
Ascending tracts: sends sensory impulses to the brain
Descending tract- sends motor impulses down
Drugs that affect the brain
Ecstasy
Heroine
Methamphetmine
cocaine
marijuana
LSD
Action potential
repolarization
hyperpolarizatioin
Depolarization occurs threshold potential is reached
Resting membrane potential
1.Depolarization
Diseases associated with the brain
Contusioin- causes tissue destruction
Concussion- Shaking of the brain
Dementia- Loss of brain function
Hemorrhagic stroke- Excessive bleeding
Ischemic stroke- Clotts stop blood
