Aversion Therapy (AT)
Effectiveness
Antabuse = treat alcohol addiction. Neiderhoffen and Staffen (โ03) Antabuse vs control (placebo). Antabuse = longer abstinence (no drinking).
Suggests Antabuse provide US = ๐ in treating serious addiction (dependency on alcohol). Better if > used along with โtalking therapies
Rapid smoking = ๐ in treating addiction to cigarettes. McRobbie (โ07). Rapid smoking (experimental group) = decrease urge of smoking ( 24 hours + 1 week) vs control (anti-smoking video).
Suggest its ๐. BUT 4 weeks later = No sig dif in amount of smoke in both groups. AT = short term benefits.
๐ฟ = not eliminate root cause of underlying problem. Only cure particular addiction. Not cure cause of addiction. Thus can resurface = reoccur in dif form of addiction or UB (symptom substitution). Suggests its not effective
Overall, effective for some addiction = smoking, drinking alcohol. Antabuse (drug) deals with alcohol = ๐ but works better with talking therapy. + rapid smoking = ๐ - but only short term benefits - 4 weeks ๐ฟ = doesnโt treat root cause but wipes symptoms thus it can reoccur into something worse or come back (symptom substitution may occur).
Ethical issues
Creating negative association = pose risk of harm. Antabuse = negative side effects when mixed with alcohol. (e.g. convulsion + heart failures). Rapid smoking = unpleasant + risk of health.
Suggest AT = ๐ฟ vs alternative treatments for addiction (CBT). Argue risk justified in terms of risks posed by alcohol and tobacco addiction. No success treatment = highly likely experience risk of harm to physical + psychological health.
Ethical costs AT = justified by long-term benefits. E.g. break serious addiction = benefit to individualโs health, finance + personal relationships.
Suggest benefits AT outweighs any potential risk, considered ethical ๐. Using AT - valid consent - take part therapeutic methods involved.
More ethical form of negative stimuli (Antabuse + rapid smoking) developed. > Covert Sensitisation = imagining dreadful scenarios occur when engaged with addictive behaviour. (e.g. imagine sick and vomiting whenever close to alcohol / drinking it). Kraft (โ05) suggests ๐ but also more ethical = avoid unpleasant reaction (Antabuse).
Overall, ethical issues e.g. negative association >pose risk of harm/health = distress > UB. NS ethical developed
e.g. covert sensitisation = less harm + scenarios = progressively worse. BUT long term benefits outweigh ethical costs + alternative ways of delivering AT e.g. covert sensitisation = ๐ therapy.

AT > Use of drugs as AS
new drug treat addiction = Antabuse last few hours. Unpleasant symptoms (sweating, heart palpitation, headaches, nausea (sick) + vomiting) within 10 min drinking alcohol.
Thus conditioned to associate drinking alcohol with feeling sick /unpleasant thus stops them from drinking. + may avoid triggers(pub)
