Central Nervous System
Major Functions of CNS
-
Integrative Function- It analyzes sensory information, stores some aspects and makes decisions.
Motor Functions- It may respond to stimuli by Initiating muscular contractions or glandular secretions.
Major Parts of the Brain
Four Main parts
-
Diencephalon
Thalamus
-
-
Plays role in emotion, memory awareness and cognition.
-
-
-
Cerebellum
Voluntary movements such as posture, balance and coordination.
-
Neuron in Nerve Tissue
-
Dendrites- Receiving portions, short, tapered and highly branched.
Axons- Start off as a single fiber, but may give off branches called collateral axon.
-
Myelin- acts as insulator and increases the speed of which impulse travels. Most axons are surrounded by it and the gaps between them is known as the myelin sheath.
Classification of Neuron
-
Bipolar- One main dendrites and one axon, and usually in special sense organs.
Layers of Meninges
Dura mater
Outer most layer, and is dense irregular CT with blood vessels and nerves.
-
-
PIa Mater
Inner most, nearly transport layer , many nerves are blood vessels.
-
Spinal Cord
-
-
-
Types of Responses
Summation- Occurs when another stimulus of same type arrives before the effect of the first stimulus wears off.
