Listening Exercise Process
Tools needed
1.
A listening file with good quality and not exceeding the length of 2 minutes. If you have decide to spend more than 1.5 hours then a listening of 3-5 minutes will work just fine.
2.
A visual reference of the listening audio file. For instance, if you are using a clip of a movie for your listening activity, make sure you have the script of that scene or part of the movie handy. You will need it at the end.
3.
A notebook, a pen and a pencil.
Steps
Step 1:
Play the listening and pause after EVERY PHRASE and write down what you hear. Don't worry about what you don't understand, leave those parts blank. If you hear something and are not sure, write it down and move on.
If the phrase you are listening to does happen to be too long, decide where to pause it in the middle and then play it in two parts. Don't go too long without pauses, listen only to as much as you can remember at once.
Step 2:
Once you have finished transcribing the entire audio file take the visual reference (script, lyrics, etc...) and compare your transcription with the script, lyrics, etc...
Step 3:
Read out loud. As you read have someone else write down all the words you have a hard time pronouncing or pronounce incorrectly. If there is noone around, try correcting yourself by searching for the correct pronounciation and comparing it to yourself.
Step 4:
Organize your mistakes into these 3 categories:
1. New Vocabulary
These are all the spaces you left blank in your transcription.
Is it a word? Is it an expression? An idiom? Look for good sources and use those in order to find out.
2. Switches and Spelling
These are all the words whose meaning you switched or mistook as in defining the word or in the spelling of the word. List these using the correct spelling.
3. Pronounciation
Once you have finished Step 3 ask someone to help you with the correct pronounciation of the words and/or expressions you pronounced badly. After that, write the way you can remember to pronounce them side by side.
