Cables
Coaxial cables are made of a single copper player surrounded by a plastic layer for insulation. Also metallic mesh around it to provide shielding from outside interference. Tend to be very cheap but also have low bandwidth
Ethernet cables (Cat 5e and 6) contain pairs of copper wires twisted together to reduce interference. Cheaper than fibre optic cables and have decent bandwidth.
Fibre optic cables transmit data as light. They are very high performance cables (do not suffer interference, can transmit over very large distances at a high bandwidth without a loss of signal quality) but are expensive.
Star Topology
Advantages

Simple to add more devices to the network since each device is connected to the switch by a separate cable

Disadvantages

If central computer fails, whole network fails
Switch determines the number of possible connections on the network - if you need more you buy a new switch

Bus Topology
Bus topologies use a single 'backbone' cable called a bus, to connect all the devices

Without the terminators, reflected signals would cause interference and potentially make the network unusable

Adding IP addresses to data packets, directing them between devices and handling traffic. (IP)

Passing data over the physical network. Responsible for how data is sent as electrical signals over cables, wireless and other hardware and for interpreting signals using device drivers (Wi-Fi, Ethernet)
