During WWI, saw the presence of shell-shock. There was a growing understanding that physical conditions led to psychiatric problems. However, these lessons were forgotten in WWII.
During WWII, Army tried to pre-screen for soldiers who would be thought to break-down. Huge movement to prevent or cut-out soldiers thought to be undergoing a breakdown.
US Army instituted plan of preventative psychiatry, including forward psychiatry. This included treating soldiers at the front lines with food, narcotics, and sleep. Used the term "combat exhaustion.
Men in this process were returned nearly at a 50% rate. Key lesson from WWII was that every man had their breaking point.
