MaryBiraiHistology
Liver: Solid Organ
-
Tissues:
- Sinusoids: seen as small white "cracks"; capillaries that bring blood through lobule towards central vein
- Hepatocytes: collection in liver in contact with large amount of blood
- Stellate macrophage: black visible and "looks dirty"
- Central vein: in middle of lobule
- Lobules: divisions of liver; tens of thousands present
- Portal triad: triad = 3 of something; can be found at corner where multiple lobules meet
- hepatic artery: thicker wall than hepatic portal vein
- hepatic vein: larger lumen than hepatic artery
- hepatic duct : has simple cuboidal epithelium
Stomach: Tubular Organ
-
Tissues:
- Mucous
- Simple columnar epithelium: orderly arrangement with cells side by side
- gastric glands: elongated white spaces; U V shaped openings
- gastric pits: opening
- Lamina propria: connective tissue in haphazard arrangement with collagen fibers and fibroblasts
- Muscularis Mucosa: multiple bands of muscle at deepest part of mucosa
- Submucosa: collagen fibers are wavy
- Muscularis externa: more straight muscle bundles
- Serosa: surrounds muscularis externa
Trachea: Tubular Organ
-
Tissues:
- Mucosa
- Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium: borders lumen. Cilia needed to move mucous
- Lamina propria : loose areolar connective tissue; deep to basement membrane
- Submucosa: glands and blood vessels visible
- Hyaline Cartilage: nearly completely circles the organ
- Trachealis Muscle: posterior aspect of trachea. smooth muscle
Lung- More Solid Organ
Alveoli
- these are the air sacs of the lung
- that somewhat resembles adipose. Circular in nature.
- wall between any 2 alveoli is formed by 2 simple squamous epithelia back to back
-
Esophagus: Tubular Organ
-
Tissues:
- Mucosa
- Stratified squamous epithelium: protection from abrasion from half chewed cocoa puffs; cells on apical surface are flat
- Lamina propria: loose areolar connective tissue; deep to basement membrane
- Muscularis mucosa: visible as bundles
- Submucosa:
- Muscularis Externa: thickest layer of esophagus
- Adventitia: surrounds the muscularis externa;
-
-
Pancreas: Solid Organ
-
Tissues
- Pancreatic Acini: small glands; epithelial cells that forming the acini create a central very small lumen
- Pancreatic Islets: look like islands in sea of acini. produce insulin and glucagon
- Pancreatic Ducts: all lumens from acini join together to form this
Kidney: Solid Organ
-
Tissues:
- Medulla: inner region of kidney; lots of tubules; no corpuscle
- Kidney Tubules: plenty of these in kidney
- Lumen: of each kidney tubule
- simple cuboidal epithelium: most kidney tubules are composed of this.
- Cortex: site of blood filtration and urine formation; outer most region
- Renal Corpuscle: this is how you know you are in the cortex
- Glomerulus: bundle of fenestrated capillaries; the yarn
- Capsular space: space between glomerulus ( yarn) and glomerular capsule (balloon)
- Glomerular capsule: encloses the renal corpsucle
- simple squamous epithelium: what glomerular capsule is composed of
Ureter: Tubular Organ
IDENTIFIER: Transitional Epithelium (looking like eyeballs & rounded dome like appearance); Smaller lumen than Urinary Bladder. Easy to see whole organ on slide
Tissues:
- Mucosa: contains lamina propria AND transitional epithelium
- transitional epithelium: dome like apical surfaces
- lamina propria: connective tissue deep to transitional epithelium
- Muscularis: only muscle layer in ureter; wraps nicely around the ureter
- Adventitia: dense fibrous connective tissue; considerable amount of adipose may accompany adventitia
Ovary: Solid Organ
-
Tissues:
- Primordial follicles: sometimes you see nucleus; sometimes you don't; most immature; many visible at edge of cortex of ovary
- Primary follicles: oocyte with flat cells along outside
- Secondary follicles: granulosa cells breaking away to form small antrum; antrum not present in primary or primordial follicle
- Mature follicles
- oocyte: has cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus
- zona pellucida: ring of proteins and carbs that immediately surround the oocyte
- corona radiata: immediately surrounds the zona pellucida; is a ring of supporting cells
- antrum: fluid filled cavity
- granulosa cells: supporting cells continuous with corona radiata
Testis: Solid Organ
-
Tissues:
- Spermatazoa: mature sperm cells possessing long wispy flagella
- Seminiferous tubules: epithelium of supportive cells and developing spermatocytets at various stages of development
- Interstitial cells: spaces in between seminiferous
-
