“The Torah” refers to the first five books of the Old Testament which tell the foundation story of the Israelites. It recounts their covenant with God and their role in human history.
These five books contain the poetry of the nation of Israel, providing the reader with important stories, poetry and wisdom.
The historical books cover about one thousand years of Israel’s history, beginning with the conquest of Canaan and ending with the return from Babylonian captivity.
These books record God’s messages to the people of Israel and Judah in the form of speeches or sermons, visions, and life experiences of prophets who preached between 750 and 450 BC. Some of the messages are of judgment and warning, while others focus on forgiveness and renewal.
The Prophetic Books are divided into two categories: the Major Prophets (5) and the Minor Prophets (12).
These Books catalog the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, the savior to whom all of the Old Testament prophecies pointed. Just as importantly, the Gospels also take great care to point out how Christ fulfilled Old Testament prophecies.
The word epistle comes from the Greek word epistole that means “letter” or “message”. Epistles were a primary form of written communication in the ancient world, especially during New Testament times. Since many. Of the New Testament books were originally written as letters to churches or individuals, they are referred to as the Epistles. An epistle would have been written on a scroll. Often, it was dictated and then reviewed by the author before being delivered by a trusted messenger.
