Amy and Nicks mother barely interacted.
Amy uses manipulation as a revenge tactic to Nick after being unfaithful and having an affair.
“I have a mistress. Now this is the part where I have to tell you I have a mistress, and you stop liking me. If you liked me to begin with. I have a pretty, young, very young mistress, and her name is Andie. I know. It's bad.” (153)
As Nick listened to Andie tell the world about their affair. “She is a little slut, she is not to be pitied. I cannot believe anyone would feel sorry for Andie. I literally refused to believe it.” (331)

”or they will get really angry and beat the crap out of me. I’ve never been hit. I’m scared of being hurt by someone else.” -Amy (308) she cut her wrists and cleaned up the blood, trashed the living room, stocked the shed to set up Nick, wrote a diary, made a fake friend to cooperate her story, put in DNA of a pregnant woman as her.
Manipulation used to hide the lack of happiness in their marriage

“I input the code, the one that drove Amy insane because it went against every rule about codes. Code rejected. I tried again. Code rejected. A bead of sweat rolled down my back. Amy had always threatened to change the code. She said it was pointless to have one so guessable, but I knew the real reason. She resented that it was my birthday and not our anniversary: Once again I chose me over us."
When they lost their jobs from the recession it caused a depressed state for both Nick and Amy.
“Wandering around our Brooklyn brownstone in our socks and pajamas. Eating ice cream at 10AM, and taking thick afternoon naps.”
