Respiration

internal

external

exchange of gasses (CO2, O2) between blood vessels (capillaries) and lungs

exchange of gasses (CO2, O2) between blood vessels (Capillaries) and tissue cells

Inhalation (inspiration)

moving air into lungs

Exhalation (expiration)

moving air out of lungs

Tracts

Conducting

nose/mouth to respiratory bronchioles

respiratory

respritory bronchioles to alveoli

upper respritory

nose to pharynx

lower respritory

pharynx to alveoli

Parts of Respiratory System

Nasal cavity

conchae- create turbulence increase contact with mucosa, pseudo-stratified cilliated columnar epithelium
mucus membrane- cleans warm and humidify incoming air

Paranasal sinuses- mallillary ethmoid sphenoid frountal
Function- same as nasal cavity and resonates voice

Pharynx

nasopharynx, oropharynx, lyngiopharynx epithelium changes from psuedostatified cilliated columbnar epithelium to stratified squamous epithelium

Larynx

function- voice production, provides open airway, makes food and air go to the correct area

Glottis

opening between vocal folds

epiglottis

covers glottis when we swallow

vocal folds/ vocal cords

voice production

trachea

passageway fro air to get to lungs
partial rings of hylan cartilage
Location-anterior to esophagus

Bronchial tree

bronchi- large to smaller
has cartilage
psudostratified cilliated columnar epithelium
smooth muscle

Bronchioles- less than 1mm in diameter
no cartilage no cillia no mucus

Alveolar sac-exchange of gasses

Alveolar sac

type I- alveolar cells one layer of simple squamous epithelium

type II- alveolar cells 1 layer cuboidal epithelium,
produce serfactin, prevent alveolar walls from sticking together

macrophage- hang out waiting to destroy invaders

respiratory membrane- simple squamous epithelium

lungs

right- 3 lobes
left- 2 lobes with cardiac notch for heart

mediastinum

everything in thoracic cavity minus the lungs
