Aid has become orthodoxy (authorised or generally accepted practice)
No longer something that is debated- beyond politics and beyond debate.
seen as unquestionably good, as something morally right e.g. despite current recessions, there is a cross party agreement to ring fence international aid budget.
Blurring of lines between development and military aid.
Also linked to celebrities.
Encourages corruption.
Lack of accountability- Policies shaped by unelected politicians outside the country.
Dead aid- Dambisa Moyo (the anti Bono)
Aid is not working- makes the poor poorer, discourages enterprise, creates dependency and undermines democracy.
"but my voice cannot compete with a guitar".
Her solution to aid dependency
Turn off the aid tap over 5-10 years to save Africa from its "aid addiction".
Attract foreign direct investments and expand the free market.
Allow Africa to access markets- all will benefit from high growth rates.
A caution
Moyo is often the "voice of Africa" in these debates- although, she is African born she was educated in Oxford and Harvard.
She workled for 2 years at the world bank, and also worked for Goldman Sachs. She has also been a board member of Barclays, Seagate, Chevron and SABMiller.
Believes in benefits for all, by opening up the market.
