Food Service Manager
(Hospitality and Tourism)
Goals
Goal #2: I want to be able to be more efficient in the tasks given to me.
I feel that I met this goal because I was able to pick up on the tasks that I did pretty easily and once I did, I was able to assist in getting food out quickly. In real jobs, this would be a good skill to have (learning quickly and applying skills) because there might be some jobs that are faster paced that won't give me time to stop and take time to learn everything at the pace I would like to take.
Goal #3: I want to be able to work better with different kinds of people.
I feel that I met this goal because I was able to communicate with the various lunch helpers that I met. All of them were different and had different expectations/ways of working and I was able to adapt to better fit the way they work. Also, the different kids that would need questions answered or help with something, I was able to assist.
Goal #1: I want to increase/improve my communication between peers/coworkers/supervisors
I feel that I both met and didn't meet this goal, depending on the circumstance. In the sense that I communicated well to get my tasks done and done correctly, I feel that I did that well. If I was ever confused about what I needed to do next, I would ask. However, I could have communicated better that I would have like to learn a bit more of the management part of things. That was more on me for being too reserved rather than my apprenticeship supervisor. I need to overcome this if I'm ever thinking about asking for a raise or promotion in a job that I feel I deserve it in.

Standards
Standard #3
Acquire Career Information
Identify personal skills, interest and abilities and relate them to current career choice
I feel that I met this standard because the apprenticeship that I chose is in a field that I love working in - food. I like cooking an preparing it as well as seeing others enjoy it. Through working with the lunch ladies and Mrs. Long, I was able to experience all of that as well as the behind-the-scenes of managing the lunch and food counts.
Standard #4
Identify Career Goals
Demonstrate awareness of the education and training needed to achieve career goals
Assess and modify their educational plan to support career
I feel that I met this standard because the behind-the-scenes required lots of on-the-spot thinking and mental math, so it was clear that at least a high school education would be needed. Although I don't think I would go into this as a career, in order to accomplish the adequate skills for this, going through at least Food and Nutrition 2 would be a good idea in order to understand the workings of food structure and food equipment handling.
Standard #2
Develop Employment Readiness
Understand the importance of responsibility, dependability, punctuality, integrity, and effort in the workplace
I feel that I met this standard because I made sure to be on time to my apprenticeship, and when I had seemingly nothing to do, I always was able to find something to help with, like cleaning or organizing.
Standard #5
Acquire Knowledge to Achieve Career Goals
Describe the effect of work on lifestyle
I feel that I met this standard because I am able to recognize the part of the job I learned through was semi-fast paced, so it would effect lifestyle by influencing your sense of time and time management. The portioning of the food based on middle school and high school varied as well, so it might make you more aware of portions at home. This job would be important to personal expression because somebody who enjoys food (cooking/preparing/eating it) would be able to enjoy it very much.
Standard #1
Develop Career Awareness
Learn how to interact and work cooperatively in teams
Pursue and develop competency in areas of interest
Balance between work and leisure time
I feel that I met this standard because I was able to communicate with my superiors well to make sure that the schools lunches were well prepared and served in an efficient manner. I also knew when it became absolutely necessary for me to use my free period for important projects versus my apprenticeship hours, and I would make sure that they absolutely didn't require my help before leaving to get my homework and projects done.
Standard #6
Apply Skills to Achieve Career Goals
Lean to work cooperatively with others as a team member
I feel that I met this standard because I feel like I was able to accomplish my goals of communicating with my superiors to make sure the job was done well.
Reflection
I chose this occupation because I have always enjoyed making food for other people and seeing their reactions to it. I felt that this apprenticeship would allow me to experience that first-hand.
After spending time at this job, I have decided that it is something that I don't want to pursue further. I love food and making food as a hobby, however I feel that if I made food every single day for a career, I would get burned out. I wouldn't want to ruin something that I love for me, so I would definitely continue doing it as a hobby, but not a career.
I really liked a lot about my apprenticeship. The ladies I worked with were very nice and understanding as I was first learning the ropes. When there were things I didn't understand, they weren't condescending when explaining and many times worked through the problem thoroughly. The job was easy enough, though it still had its challenges, which were good learning experiences. It was very easy to keep an open line of communication between me and them.
I didn't like the fact that there wasn't much of the management that I learned, other than keeping track of inventory and lunch counts.
