TEST 1A - PHYSICAL LAYERING -time is about layering and continually building on the past.

time as a dressmaker is specialized at making any dress change and transform through alterations. no matter how much the dressmaker (i.e. time) changes in the dress, it is still the same dress.
underneath all the changes with time it is still the same dress
as time passed we might have gone through many changes, but we are essentially cavemen. this metaphor is powerful as it is blending the modern man (holding a tray of fast food) with the caveman.
the city gate might have gone through changes with time but its function has not changed. the city gate shows all the changes through time and in doing so emphasizes that although it has been subject to changes it has always remained the gate into the city.

the numbers represent the next 10 years and therefore the viewer is essentially allowed to travel through time. is just a constant reshuffling of the same code over and over again. creating a sensation of being lost in time.
essentially the effect of time is evident in city gate by showing the changes in the organisation and structure of the same opening.
