New Media
"What is New Media?"
The real question is: What ISN'T new media? New Media gives us the ability to be interactive with our media and old media used to follow specific restrictions and formats.
The Medium is the Message: technology is used as an extension to the human body, and in turn, makes us lazy.
Video Games & Violence
Why Online Games Make Players Act Like Psychopaths: Many people lash out in anger while playing video games when they lose a life or mess up. However, most people would not do this in a realistic setting. They can act like psychopaths in a video game because there are no consequences for their actions (example: jail time for committing crimes).
Games, Learning, and Literacy: Video games actually enhance thinking skills. Most games are designed for people to think and problem solve. This can only be seen as a benefit for problem solving and critical thinking.
Virtual Reality 101
Most people that use it are either interested in experiencing it, do not know how to interact in a real-life environment, or are extremely introverted
Used as an escape from reality. Virtual reality is a way that you can visit famous places, experiencing a movie as if you were in it, and being a part of a video game through technology.
Higher Education
The Digital Degree: Seems to be a beneficial idea because of the costs of attending a 4-year university. However, most people that do this feel as though they will not get a career in the end because they seem less qualified.
Higher Education is Not a Mixtape: Many people believe that education will die out if it does not keep up with technology. Many schools that do not have any aspect of being connected online are considered to be behind in education. However, although education should be keeping up, it will not die out just because technology is around. If anything, it will continue to enhance the ability to become educated.
Mastering Memory
We feel out of touch if we do not always have a device at our fingertips. We use social media applications because they give us everything we want whenever we want it.
Google Knowing
We depend on Google to give us all of the information that we need. We feel as though we do not need to remember anything because we know that we can always find it in a matter of seconds thanks to Google's efficiency and accessibility.
The Accidental Universe
Our contact with the world today is no longer a direct experience; we experience the world through artificial devices such as smartphones, chatrooms, social media, and other technologies.
Our Digital Form of Life
Neuromedia: Having smartphones directly inside of our brains. Using technology has become a way of life for anyone who has the ability to use it, which is why one day, it would not be impossible to have smartphones in our brains.
Sherry Turkle
Connected but Alone: We use our smartphones and technology so much when we are together with other people. Although we are with them in real life, we area always connected and plugged into our virtual reality. This leaves us "connected, but alone". We love technology because we are able to put our attention wherever we want it to be whenever we want it to be there
"We are only getting 'sips' of connection, not real communication"

Tools of the Mind
Nicholas Carr: our brain has the power to hold different tools that all benefit us in different ways whether it is instinctual or learned.
HER
A man falls in love with an operating system in a futuristic Los Angelas setting. This movie shows the innovation of futuristic relationships. It also focuses on how introverted he becomes when he meets the operating system; he depends on her as a girlfriend and forgets about the world around him. This is a metaphor for those who are addicted to technology and become so invested in their virtual reality.
Rosen vs Hampton
The social debate:"Is technology making people less sociable?". Rosen believes that technology is making people less sociable and we should work on putting our phones away and focus on the reality in front of us. Hampton believes that technology enhances relationships and makes us more sociable so we should continue using them.

Bored & Brilliant
We usually turn to our phones and technology when we are bored to fill our time, however, we should embrace our boredness. Studies show that when you are bored you will be more creative and come up with more interesting ideas.
Smart Phones
Primary Purposes:
1) The Social Aspect (Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.)
2)The Entertainment Aspect (Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, etc.)
3) The Communication Aspect (calling, texting, etc.)
4) The Cognitive Reasoning Aspect (Google, Bing, Yahoo!, etc.)
