Respiratory system
functions
-
inhalation/ inspiration : breathing in, air into lungs
exhalation/expiration : breathing out, moving air out of lungs
bring 02 in, let C02 out.
-
Larynx
functions- voice production, provides open airway w/ help of cartilage, makes air and food go to correct places w/ help of epiglottis
-
-
-
bronchial tree
bronchi- large to smaller, have cartilage, PCCE, smooth muscle
bronchioles- less than 1mm in diameter, no cartilage, no cilia, no mucus, no goblet cels, smooth muscle
air passageway
bronchi > bronchioles > terminal bronchioles > respiratory bronchioles > alveolar ducts > sacs > alveoli
alveolus
type 1 alveolar cells - most abundant, simple squamous 1 layer flat cells
type 2 alveolar cells- green cells, cuboidal, secrete surfactant (prevents walls from sticking together)
macrophages- purple, patrolling/ waiting for something to come along that they can destroy
nasal cavity
features
conchae- create turbulence, increase contact of incoming air w/ mucosa
-
function- clean, warm, humidify incoming air
paranasal sinuses
features- maxillary, ethmoid, sphenoid, frontal
-
functions- cleans, warms, humidifies incoming air, give voice resonance
pharynx
-
epithelial lining- nasal: psedostratified ciliated columnar epithelium. Oral: stratified squamous epithelium
-
trachea
-
anatomical features- partial rings of cartilage(hyaline), psedostratified ciliated columnar epithelium, anterior to esophagus.
